Apparently ubuntu 8.04 is OK, so you could try that instead of 9.04.

It's unlikely to damage the laptop. It should have an automatic thermal
shutdown. Most likely it will just shut itself down if it overheats.

Without seeing the post I can't be sure, but most likely someone changed
the code that controls the fan speed to make it quieter, but reduced it
too much so the fan doesn't run fast enough and the notebook overheats.
